Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: Distinction / 1,5, University of Bristol, language: English, abstract: The first part of the essay introduces the map application OsmAnd. The main business processes will be outlined using a flow diagram before illustrating the applications value proposition and revenue model. Finally a SWOT-analysis will identify the applications strength to be the deployment of mobile map data, the customisation of map rendering and the ability of trip recording, audio and video notes and OSM editing. The second part of the essay uses a PEST-analysis to identify developing potential in a developing country, which was chosen to be Thailand. In consideration of the identified strengths of OsmAnd, the development of the agricultural sector was chosen for further investigation. A short summary of the current situation of the agribusiness follows. The third part of the essay matches the insights from the SWOT- and PEST-analyses to create a new business model. The model is then outlined in a similar manner as initially OsmAnd. Business processes are outlined with the support of a flow diagram, before the changes in value proposition and revenue model are discussed. The fourth part of the essay sketches potential risks identified during the design process of the new business model and their solution approaches, before concluding that the new model relies on the contribution of the users and the Thai government. Finally it will be recommended that a good stakeholder management will be needed to overcome the threat caused by these dependencies.

Distributed Database Systems (DDBS) may be defined as integrated database systems composed of autonomous local databases, geographically distributed and interconnected by a computer network. The purpose of this monograph is to present DDBS concurrency control algorithms and their related performance issues. The most recent results have been taken into consideration. A detailed analysis and selection of these results has been made so as to include those which will promote applications and progress in the field. The application of the methods and algorithms presented is not limited to DDBSs but also relates to centralized database systems and to database machines which can often be considered as particular examples of DDBSs. The first part of the book is devoted to basic definitions and models: the distributed database model, the transaction model and the syntactic and semantic concurrency control models. The second discusses concurrency control methods in monoversion DDBSs: the locking method, the timestamp ordering method, the validation method and hybrid methods. For each method the concept, the basic algorithms, a hierarchical version of the basic algorithms, and methods for avoiding performance failures are given. The third section covers concurrency control methods in multiversion DDBSs and the fourth, methods for the semantic concurrency model. The last part concerns performance issues of DDBSs. The book is intended primarily for DDBMS designers, but is also of use to those who are engaged in the design and management of databases in general, as well as in problems of distributed system management such as distributed operating systems and computer networks.

Iterating Infusion: Clearer Views of Objects, Classes, and Systems is a one-of-a-kind book, not dependent on any single technology. Rather, it provides a way to integrate the most efficient techniques from a variety of programming methods, in a manner that makes designing and programming software look easy. Iterating Infusion presents comprehensive tools for you to best manage and work with object orientation. These include simplified fundamental concepts, popular language comparisons, advanced designing strategies, a broad usage progression, thorough design notations (interaction algebra), and data-oriented (fundamentally-OO) languages. The title, Iterating Infusion , alludes to the fact that any system has multiple, coexisting functional levels and that new levels-both lower and higher-are continually added to the same functional area. The practical effect is to bring processes into focus, always clarifying the vague. The extreme form of this is when separate but compatible technologies are brought together to create advancements; these can be baby-steps or great leaps, with varying amounts of effort. In more general terms, the same thing in a different context can take on much more power. And actually, this phenomenon is at the heart of object-oriented software. Readers have been confirming that, compared to books on just low-level details, Iterating Infusion presents cohesive insights that allow you to solve more problems with the same effort in more key places.
